Nestled in the rolling hills of Oxfordshire, just a short drive from the charming town of Banbury, lies a treasure straight out of history: Broughton Castle. This moated manor house isn’t just a pile of ancient stones — it’s a vibrant, lived-in testament to centuries of fascinating stories, architectural beauty, and Elizabethan splendour.
Imagine the year 1306: knights clash, swords gleam, and a fortified manor rises from the marshlands. Over the centuries it witnessed the changing tides of England, from the opulent reign of Elizabeth I to the tumultuous English Civil War, when it bore the scars of battle. Through it all, the Fiennes family, Barons Saye and Sele, remained steadfast guardians of this majestic home.
Crossing the bridge over the moat, you’re transported to another era. Grand fireplaces crackle, intricate tapestries whisper tales of the past, and the Great Hall echoes with the phantom sounds of feasting and revelry. The current Lord and Lady Saye and Sele call it home, adding a touch of contemporary life to the centuries-old walls.
Open to the public during the summer months, Broughton Castle offers guided tours as well as open days to wander at your own pace. Don’t miss the charming tearoom in the Gatehouse for a delightful post-castle indulgence.

Park up at The Fox, head out to explore, then return for a well-earned pint and a hot meal. Open for lunch Wednesday to Sunday and dinner Wednesday to Saturday.
